In a city defined by relentless momentum, a mindful shift is taking root across the streets of Dhaka.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has officially rolled out a dedicated network of women-only “Pink Buses” on August 18, carving out spaces of safety, dignity, and calm for female commuters navigating the capital’s busy corridors.
Inaugurated at the Tejgaon depot, the initiative introduces an initial phase of buses spanning 10 primary routes across Dhaka and adjoining areas like Gazipur and Narayanganj.
Designed to transform the daily cadence of urban travel, the service features thoughtfully mapped routes connecting key residential hubs such as Natun Bazar, Taltola, and Mirpur directly to the city’s commercial and governmental heart in Motijheel and GPO.
According to a study, 84% women in Bangladesh experience sexual harassment in public places. The all-female powered Pink Bus is one of the government’s efforts to address this issue.
For Muslim women and travelers seeking a more modest, private environment, this transition offers a deeply welcomed sanctuary away from the overcrowded, chaotic conditions of general public transit.
More than just a logistical update, the initiative redefines public and safe mobility by placing the entire operation in the hands of female drivers and conductors.
It offers peace of mind and security for women on the move.
