There is a distinct shift happening in the way we document the world. For a long time, travel and regional documentation leaned heavily on the objective lens—the documentary photograph, the structured report, the linear history.

But some landscapes demand more than a recording; they require an interpretation. They require creators willing to listen to the spaces between the trees, the subtle rhythms of community-based survival, and the memories carried across river borders.

This is the ground from which the Art Borneo Residency 2026 emerges.

A collaborative initiative brought to life by National Talent Management, Festival Lestari, and Emehdeyeh, this residency invites emerging visual creators from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam to step away from traditional production cycles.

Instead, it invites them into a period of deep incubation and field research across West Kalimantan—specifically within the Sanggau, Sintang, and Kapuas Hulu Regencies.

Beyond the Lens: A Call for Contextual Practices

What makes this residency particularly compelling for those invested in intentional, slow exploration is its explicit departure from purely documentary-based outputs. The open call actively encourages conceptual, speculative, experimental, and participatory research.

It asks a fundamental question: How do we visualize the invisible forces shaping Borneo today?

The residency focuses on critical, place-based contemporary issues that define the current West Kalimantan landscape:

  • Restorative Economies: Exploring community-based economic models that heal rather than extract.
  • Local Knowledge Systems: Honoring the living heritage and enduring wisdom of Indigenous communities.
  • Landscape Transformation: Interrogating the social change left in the wake of shifting ecosystems and natural resource management.
  • Mobility and Memory: Mapping the deep, ancient, interregional connections that bind the people of the island across modern borders.

The landscape is not just a backdrop for human activity; it is an active participant in our cultural and internal identity.

The Geography of Exploration

Participants will find themselves immersed in a geography defined by water and forest. The fields of research—Sanggau, Sintang, and Kapuas Hulu—are areas where the tension between modern development and heritage-driven continuity is actively playing out.

       [ REGIONAL DIALOGUE ]
(Pontianak Art Borneo × Jakarta JIPFest)

By placing artists from three different nations (all sharing the landmass of Borneo) into this specific crucible, the program aims to build a more nuanced, cross-border contemporary art discourse.

A Note for The Ruhfar Frontiers: For the modern Muslimah creator, the journey is welcoming and deeply accommodating; the rich, historic Islamic heritage embedded along the Kapuas River ensures that prayer spaces and halal-friendly subsistence are an organic, comforting part of the field residency experience.

The Path to Participation

For regional creators aged 18 to 35 whose practices touch the soul of Borneo, this program serves as both a sanctuary and a platform. Selected residents receive comprehensive structural support, including return travel, regional accommodation, subsistence, and dedicated production funding to bring their conceptual visions to life.

The final research outcomes will not remain in isolation; they are slated to bridge regional communities and capital dialogues, with public presentations at Art Borneo 2026 in Pontianak and JIPFest 2026 in Jakarta.

Applications require a thoughtful approach: a curated portfolio of recent work (2024–2026), a motivation letter detailing the evolution of your practice, and a 1,000-word conceptual proposal mapping your intended research methodology.

For those ready to listen to the deep roots of West Kalimantan and translate them into new contemporary paths, the application details and forms are officially open.
