Standing at the heart of the iconic Bukit Bintang crossing, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh transitioned from global screen icon to unofficial national ambassador, as the “leading lady” for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026), by framing Malaysia’s tourism ambitions through a cinematic lens, declaring that the nation is no longer just a destination—it is a global stage.
Launching the ‘I Lite U’ initiative, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed the crowd as Malaysia’s upcoming tourism chapter through a lens of national unity, declaring that the nation is no longer just a destination—it is a global stage built on the strength of its people.
Peace is Malaysia’s Greatest Export
Addressing the diverse crowd at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the city’s glowing lights are a reflection of the country’s inner stability. He noted that tourism thrives only when a nation is at peace.

It has been a success because of all the races we are seeing here – from Perlis to Sabah to Sarawak. Every race—we should be proud, and we need to defend this. We are proud Malaysians; the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, the Sarawakians, the Sabahans—we are a great nation!
The event also saw the presence of Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, among others.
Kuala Lumpur as the Global Stage This Visit Malaysia 2026
The highlight of the evening came as Yeoh stood alongside Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to illuminate the city.

She drew a direct parallel between the lights of Hollywood and the glowing streets of KL:
“When I was asked to take part in this ceremony, I thought of the lights on a film set—lights that reveal depth, color, and the emotion of a story about to unfold. Now, let us see the city as our set and the world as our audience.
To my fellow Malaysians, let us show the true meaning of Malaysian hospitality, she said
‘I LITE U’: Transforming The Urban Landscape
The event wasn’t just about glamor; it marked the launch of a massive infrastructure project aimed at boosting Malaysia’s Dazzling Lights:

- Infrastructure: The Innovative Lighting Infrastructure Towards Eco-elegance Urbanisation (I Lite U) project covers a 1km stretch of Bukit Bintang.
- Sustainable Spark: Features over 70 LED installations, including energy-efficient “Moon Lights” and grand chandeliers.
- Safety & Style: The project is designed to improve pedestrian safety with accessibility in mind while creating “Instagrammable” landmarks to drive digital tourism.
- Economic Catalyst: Positioned as the primary “curtain-raiser” for the influx of tourists expected in 2026 as Bukit Bintang has been known to be Kuala Lumpur’s major tourism and commercial hub.
